Back to the Loom

It is so nice to be able to get back to weaving. I enjoy the rainy, grey days because I can stay inside with a clear conscience and weave. All summer I am too busy with the garden, with running back and forth to San Juan Island selling things, with summer guests to get much weaving done.

I have been having fun making up mug rugs, or potholders/coasters for Christmas sales. I sold out of most of the ones I made last spring so I needed to make more.

I just finished this roll of 30. They are woven from cotton flannel material, mostly leftover pieces from rugs. Now I need to cut them apart and hem them and put on labels and then we're ready to go.

  1. How do you hem the mug rugs so the edges aren't too bulky? Or does the bulk just end up matching the thickness of the part with fabric weft? I'm working on mug rugs and the hemstitching is making it time prohibitive even if it's fun to cut off the loom and have everything finished (except the wet finishing).

  2. I weave a 1 1/2 " hem with carpet warp in plain weave at each end. I then fold the hem in three thicknesses and sew on the sewing machine. The hems come out similar to the thickness of the mug rugs which are woven in rosepath with strips of cotton flannel sheet material. If you click on the picture to get a larger view you can see the woven hems between each mug rug.
